Taliban Suspend Women’s Education in Afghanistan till Further Notice.
The Taliban’s higher education ministry on Tuesday disclosed that women would no longer go to universities until further notice.
The suspension was confirmed by an Afghan Ministry of education spokesperson through a letter in which he also added that the decision was made during a cabinet meeting and it would take effect immediately.
Angry with the Taliban’s policy for prohibiting women from going to university, at least two lecturers from Kunduz and Kabul universities have tendered their resignation letters, and a medical student from Nangarhar university, Amu by name, reportedly walked out of class all to express their anguish.
To express their dissatisfaction and anger, many Afghanistan citizens have protested on social media in solidarity with women regarding the Taliban’s suspension of women’s education.
Following the announcement, female students were seen crying and embracing each other at the universities’ gate on Wednesday after they were restricted from entering the school premises.
According to the report, girls were prohibited from attending even secondary schools ever since the Taliban took over in August 2021.
However, Human Rights Watch, the United Nations, and several countries have faulted the decision and described it as a “shameful decision”. Foreign diplomats also disclosed that they were surprised when they first heard the news.
Taliban is a pro-Pashtun as well as a Sunni Islamist nationalist which was founded in the 1990s. It ruled many Afghanistan from 1996 to 2001 and they impose many inhuman policies and treat women unjustly. One of the students lamented that the Taliban has cut off the bridge that connected her to her future.
