Confusion as Citizens are not ready for the general election…Falana
Due to the economic hardship in the country caused by petrol and the newly redesigned naira notes scarcity, the Human Rights Lawyer, Femi Falana, says that the possibility of conducting the presidential and governorship elections on the 25th of February and 11th of March respectively is very slim.
Speaking on the issue, Mr. Femi noted that Nigerians are not prepared for the forthcoming general elections.
Naira and petrol scarcity have caused a lot of riots and protests in various parts of the country, in the course of protesting, many lives and properties worth millions have been destroyed.
However, concerned citizens have expressed doubt if the election will hold this week Saturday. According to Falana, a senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN), there are clear indications that citizens are not ready and prepared for the forthcoming general elections.
Irrespective of the assurance of safety and security gave by the government, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and the armed forces, Nigerians are still scared to come out and exercise their franchise.
For the elections to hold, patriotic citizens argue that issues regarding petrol and Naira scarcity should be addressed appropriately before the elections are conducted. The cash scarcity does not only affect citizens, NSA as well as the armed forces are also facing the same challenges, especially in the counter-insurgency campaigns.
It has been noted that citizens without money will not be motivated to go out and cast their vote, therefore, the issues of naira and fuel scarcity should be fully addressed as soon as possible so that citizens can be able to go out in numbers and exercise their franchise.
