The governorship candidate of the Young Progressive Party in Akwa Ibom State, Sen. Bassey Albert Akpan has been sentenced to 42 years imprisonment for corruption. A Federal High Court in Uyo on Thursday convicted sen. Bassey Akpan for court charges brought before him by the EFCC.

Sen. Akpan also known as OBA was convicted yesterday by Justice Agatha Okeke for a six-count charge related to money laundering, bribery, and stealing, crimes which he committed during his tenure as the commissioner of service.

In 2019, Mr. Akpan also appeared before the Federal High Court in Uyo on June 24, he was accused of collecting a BMW ×5 (bulletproof) from one Mr. Olajide Omokore worth N50 million in 2012, and Infinity Q×56 (bulletproof) worth N45 million still from Mr. Jide.

However, in 2013, he collected Toyota Landcruiser worth N40 million, and in 2014, he collected a Toyota Hiace High Roof bus which amounted to N27 million all from Mr. Olajide.

Although Solomon Umoh in the defense council beseech the court to tamper justice with mercy and consider a fine as an option for the sake of his wife and children, his plead proved abortive as Mr. Albert Bssey has been taken to the Ikot Ekpene Correctional Centre to serve his jail term.
