Fear Gripped Awka As Gunmen Invade UNIZIK Female Hostel, Rape, And Rob Them

The entire school community of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State has expressed shock and frustration following the rape of 9 female students on Friday.

According to the report, the ugly incident happened in the early hours of Friday. About 20 gunmen armed with axes, matchets, and guns invaded the school hostels at Ifite road shooting sporadically and robbing the students of their valuables.

A student of the University who pleaded anonymity disclosed that they were in a separate hostel when they started hearing gunshots which lasted for more than ten minutes. Due to fear, they started running helter-skelter to seek refuge behind shops around the hostel.

A few minutes later, noises were heard from the students living in the female hostel calling for help but no one was able to respond to their call for help. Some of the female students who initially resisted the gunmen from raping them were beaten mercilessly.
It was gathered that 9 female students were raped by the gunmen.

When the Governor of the State, Charles Soludo was contacted, security operatives were immediately deployed to the area to battle with the gunmen but unfortunately, they were not able to meet them as the gunmen had left a few minutes before their arrival.

The Police Public Relations Officer DSP, Tochukwu Ikenga disclosed that the students were also attacked in restaurants and bars in the same area four days ago and some of the criminals were arrested.

Assuring the students of their safety, security operatives are on the ground to ensure that there is calmness within and around the school environment.
